Frequently Asked Questions
Is the YWCA only for women?
No. While we primarily serve women, children and families, the inclusion of all people naturally means we support men as well. In Portland, as we expand our Domestic Violence programs we are continually reaching out to men to help solve the pervasive problems of violence within families.
Are you a faith-based organization?
No. While YWCA used to stand for “Young Women’s Christian Association” in 2000 our name was changed to reflect our work as a secular organization. People of many denominations and religious beliefs work, volunteer and receive services here.
Is the YWCA associated with the YMCA?
No. We are separate nonprofit organizations with very different missions and programs.
Does the YWCA still have a swimming pool?
Yes. Our pool was renovated in 2003 and is open to all members of our 10th Avenue Athletic Club. Drop in day passes are available.
Do people pay for services at the YWCA?
Many of our programs are need based and offered free of charge. A few programs are fee based including some of our Camp and Youth Programs and the 10th Avenue Athletic Club. All of these fee based programs offer scholarships and/or discounted rates for low-income people.
Can I volunteer?
Yes! The YWCA could not exist, nor provide the wonderful myriad of services we offer without our valued volunteers. Many volunteer opportunities are available. Click Here to Volunteer Now.
What and how can I donate?
Your financial support is critical to the success of our work. Click Here to Donate Now!. General donations of many different personal, utilitarian and clothing items are also needed year round. Click Here to Learn More.
